Why use an adhesive on your print bed?
The first layer is the foundation of every print. If it does not stick properly, the print shifts during printing or the corners lift because the material shrinks as it cools (warping). An adhesive forms a thin layer between bed and print: while the bed is warm it holds the print, and once the bed has cooled the print comes loose again. With PETG on a smooth PEI bed it works the other way round: there the layer stops the print sticking too firmly.
Which adhesive should you choose?
| Product | For | Feature |
|---|---|---|
| 3DLAC adhesion spray (400 ml) | PLA, ABS, PETG and more | Aerosol: an even layer over the whole bed in one go. |
| 3DLAC Plus (100 ml) | PLA, ABS, PETG and more | Pump sprayer, easy to dose. |
| 3DLAC Stick (80 ml) | PLA, ABS, PETG and more | Stick: you only apply it where the print will be. |
| Magigoo Original (50 ml) | PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA, HIPS and TPU | Glue stick with a spring valve; according to Magigoo good for more than 100 prints. |
| Magigoo Pro PP | PP only | For PP filament, which ordinary glue barely sticks to. |
| Magigoo Pro PA | Nylon (PA) only | For nylon filament. |
| Magigoo Pro Flex | TPU, TPE and TPC only | For flexible filament; tested with Fiberlogy FiberFlex, among others. |
If you mainly print PLA and PETG, 3DLAC adhesion spray or Magigoo Original will do. For PP, nylon and flexible filament, choose the Pro version for that material, such as Magigoo Pro PP.
How to apply an adhesive
- Clean the bed: first make the bed grease-free with isopropanol from our maintenance category.
- Spray: spray an even, thin mist over the bed from about 30 cm.
- Magigoo: shake the bottle, press the tip onto the bed so the valve opens, and only coat the area where the print will be. Do not squeeze the bottle, or the applicator may come off.
- Removing: let the bed cool and the print comes loose. With the 3DLAC Stick this works most easily below 30 °C.
- Cleaning: 3DLAC and Magigoo Original dissolve in water. Remove residue of Magigoo Pro PP and Pro PA with a wet, hard sponge.
For large prints in PP, nylon or flexible filament, Magigoo recommends a brim of about 20 mm. The Pro versions are intended for professional use: avoid contact with your eyes and wash your hands after use.
Joining prints with superglue
With a few drops, Weiss COSMO CA-500.110 superglue (20 g) quickly gives a hard, strong bond between printed parts, including PLA and ABS. This glue is meant for your prints, not for your print bed.
Tips for a good first layer
- Warping with ABS and ASA: an adhesive helps, but also avoid draughts and use a brim or an enclosure.
- PETG on PEI: a layer of adhesion spray or glue stick acts as a release layer, so your print and your plate stay intact.
