What is PLA filament

PLA filament is by far the most popular and most used filament for 3D printers. PLA filament is characterized by its ease of use. Many beginner makers will start with PLA because it is very forgiving, but experienced printers also still enjoy working with PLA. You can print very accurately with PLA filament and a heated print bed can be used but is not required. Additionally, it is a competitively priced filament that allows you to create the most beautiful 3D prints. With Fiberlogy PLA Mineral, you can print gypsum-like models, an amazing end product.

Where does PLA filament come from?

PLA stands for PolyLactic Acid or polylactide or polymilk acid in Dutch. PLA is biodegradable and is produced from plant-based raw materials (cornstarch or sugarcane). For this reason, PLA filament is seen as a sustainable alternative to the more traditional plastics that are based on petroleum. The raw material of PLA, or the granulate pellets, originally has a transparent appearance.

Why and when do you choose PLA filament?

In addition to being the most affordable filament we sell, PLA is also available in many colors. So, there is a color, or color combination, for every 3D project that matches your preferences. Furthermore, PLA is flexible and will easily come out of your extruder. This allows for high precision achievable at higher print speeds. The fumes of PLA are non-toxic and almost odorless, at most, it gives off a slightly sweet smell. PLA filament can easily adhere to the print bed and the layers will also fuse and adhere well to each other.

Applications for PLA filament

PLA filament has many fun, functional, and useful applications. Here are some examples:

  • Toys: human figures, animals, constructions, houses, vehicles, dice.
  • Gadgets: keychains, stands, phone cases.
  • Prototypes: new products, concept models.
  • Jewelry and accessories: earrings, bracelets, beads, necklaces.
  • Decoration: Christmas tree ornaments, hangers.

The benefits of PLA filament

  • Easy to apply and shape.
  • The most affordable in terms of purchase price.
  • Flexible with low risk of clogging.
  • Faster print speeds possible.
  • No unpleasant or toxic odors.
  • Strong adhesion between layers and to the print surface.
  • Available in many colors.
  • Use of a heated bed is optional.
  • Good and easy to post-process. For example, sanding or painting.

When is PLA filament not the most suitable to use?

In addition to the many advantages that PLA filament offers, there are also considerations for using a different filament for a specific project. PLA filament is hard and strong but not the strongest filament available. It can absorb water (over time) and become brittle and more prone to breaking in outdoor conditions. It also cannot withstand very high temperatures. Your work may deform at temperatures above 60℃. Therefore, it is better to print a container for the car under the hot sun or an enclosure for electronics with a more heat-resistant material. Each material has its own strengths and weaknesses, and it really depends on the project you are working on to determine which filament is best to use. Due to the open structure of PLA, this material is not recommended for use with food or edible items, as bacteria could nest in it, which is harmful to health.

The downsides of PLA filament

  • There are harder and stronger types of filament available.
  • It can become brittle in outdoor conditions.
  • Not suitable for very high temperatures (above approximately 60℃).
  • Not recommended for use with food or edible items.
