What is standard PLA?

Standard PLA is PLA without special additives: no matte finish, no extra impact resistance and no fibres. It prints at a low temperature, hardly shrinks and sticks well to the bed. That makes it the obvious choice for beginners and for any print where colour, detail and ease of printing come first. You can compare all PLA types side by side under PLA filament.

Pros and cons of standard PLA

Pros

  • Easy to print, also for beginners
  • The widest choice of colours
  • Sharp details and a clean surface
  • Good value, especially as a refill or on a large spool

Cons

  • A slight sheen on which layer lines stay visible; for no sheen, print with PLA Matte
  • Stiff and therefore less impact-resistant; for parts that need to take a knock, choose PLA Impact
  • Softens from around 55–60 °C

Frequently asked questions

  • What is a PLA refill?

A refill is filament without a plastic spool. You mount it on a reusable spool, such as the Masterspool you can print yourself. A refill costs a little less and leaves you with less plastic waste. Easy PLA refill weighs 0.85 kg, the same as the regular spool. Read how it works in Fiberlogy refill filament.

  • Which spool size should I choose?

For a colour you use now and then, a 0.5 kg spool of Fill 3D is handy. Most Easy PLA comes on 0.85 kg, and Fill 3D PLA also on 1 kg. If you print a lot in black, white, grey or graphite, Easy PLA on a 2.5 kg spool is cheaper per kilo. That large spool does not fit in the Bambu Lab AMS, though.

  • Does standard PLA fit in the Bambu Lab AMS?

Most spools do, both Easy PLA on 0.85 kg and Fill 3D PLA. Refills without a spool and the 2.5 kg spools do not fit. Each product shows whether it fits in the AMS. Read more in Fiberlogy and Fill 3D spools in the Bambu Lab AMS.

  • Which PLA should I use for a lithophane?

A lithophane needs a white PLA that lets light through evenly, such as Easy PLA Lithophane White. Print the lithophane upright, with 100% infill and a low layer height, to bring out the details. For a lithophane in colour, use the Easy PLA CMYK set with cyan, magenta, yellow and Lithophane White.

  • Is standard PLA strong enough for functional parts?

For holders, organisers and parts under little load, yes. If a part has to survive a knock or a fall, choose PLA Impact. If it gets warm or stays outdoors, PETG is a better choice.
