What is technical filament?

PLA and PETG cover most print jobs. Technical filament starts where they stop: with parts that have to bend without breaking, rub against each other, meet chemicals, or are so complex that the support has to disappear afterwards. Every material in this category was chosen for one such property, which is why they are grouped by type.

Which material suits your application?

TPU / Flex

Rubber-like flexible filament for parts that need to give and absorb impacts: seals, grips, protective covers and dampers. Fiberlogy FiberFlex comes in 30D and 40D hardness; MattFlex 40D has a matte surface, and FiberFlex Aero is a lightweight, foaming TPU.

Nylon / PA12

Tough, resilient and wear-resistant, with low friction. The choice for gears, hinges, clips and wear parts. Nylon absorbs moisture, so store it dry and dry the spool before printing.

Nylon + CF / GF

Nylon PA12 reinforced with carbon or glass fibre, for parts that need stiffness and dimensional stability as well as toughness. Fibre-reinforced filament is abrasive: print it with a hardened nozzle.

PP

Polypropylene is light, tough and resistant to many chemicals, and it flexes back instead of breaking. Ideal for hinges that open and close often, clips and storage solutions. PP sticks best to a surface like itself, such as packing tape or a PP-compatible build plate.

Soluble

Support material that dissolves after printing: BVOH in water, HIPS in limonene. It lets you print overhangs, cavities and moving parts in one go, without breaking or sanding. You need a printer that can print several materials at once.
